Students must apply for credit through the Study Abroad Office before they can request the ISA. Study Abroad deadlines are earlier than the ISA deadline!
TOC:
The ISA is disbursed in two lump sums directly to students. Students are responsible for paying non-Yale study abroad fees. The ISA does not send payments directly to programs.
ISA Travel Stipend is generally disbursed first, to allow students to make travel arrangements as early as possible. ISA Program Expenses are disbursed in early May through June.
The ISA Travel Stipend is disbursed as a flat regional stipend via Zelle. Students must have a Zelle account to receive this stipend.
Ensure that your Zelle account fits the following criteria:
Yale's preferred method of payment is Zelle. Students are encouraged to set up a US bank checking account and Zelle, so that they may receive funding from Yale sources such as the ISA or fellowships. Opening a bank account is also helpful for financial management.
If Zelle is not an option, students should reach out to the ISA Team for assistance and further instructions.
Program Expenses include all ISA budget categories except those included in the ISA Travel Stipend. This part of the ISA is disbursed by the Undergraduate Financial Aid (UFA) Office in proportion to the student's ISA eligibility percentage.
UFA disburses ISA Program Expenses directly into students' Yale Accounts. This is the same account where Yale term charges appear. The ISA will appear as a credit on the account.
Students can withdraw ISA funds to a personal bank account by requesting a refund. Instructions will be shared during ISA disbursement.
FAQ: Non-Yale Study Abroad Students
Students will withdraw the full ISA amount they are eligible to receive. Students must then use these funds to pay for their study abroad program and related expenses. The ISA will not send payment directly to the program.
FAQ: Yale Summer Session (YSS) Abroad Students
YSS Abroad charges are billed by Yale and will appear in the student's Yale Account. The ISA is deposited in the same account and will automatically be applied toward these charges. Students can withdraw any remaining balance to use for other expenses related to their study abroad program.
FAQ: All Students: Yale Account Charges and the ISA
Any charges that appear in the student's Yale account at time of ISA disbursement, such as pending Yale term payments, will lower the ISA. Students are encouraged to ensure that their Yale Account balance is 0 before the ISA is disbursed.
In addition to the above considerations, international students must ensure that their Spintax Calculus is on file and up to date before requesting an ISA. A completed Sprintax Calculus application is required in order to receive funding from Yale.
For tax document purposes, students must also ensure that they have an accurate US address listed in Yale Hub. The Primary Address should remain the student's home address, as per OISS guidance, but at least one other address must be a US address to which tax documents can be sent.
